What Causes Neck and Shoulder Pain?
Neck and shoulder pain are generally caused by poor posture and movement habits, especially stemming from sitting in front of a computer. The fine motor skills needed to perform repetitive tasks like typing, texting or playing video games create unnecessary tension in the arms, which in turn causes neck and shoulder pain and tension.
Also, focusing intently on objects in front of you, like a computer screen or television, creates a narrowing of the vision. As you lose awareness of your peripheral vision, your head moves forward, in front of your shoulders. Then your shoulders round, and the muscles of your upper back and neck have to work overtime to hold you upright. These muscles become hypertonic – too tense – and cause neck and shoulder pain.
Can Rolfing Help Neck and Shoulder Pain?
Absolutely, Rolfing is a fantastic treatment for neck and shoulder pain. One of the primary goals of Rolfing is to bring the body back into alignment, creating a “lateral line” from the ear to the shoulder, hip, knee and foot. Rolfing eases neck and shoulder pain by balancing the head and neck back over the shoulders.
Rolfing also restores movement to the cervical vertebra – the bones of your neck. As your neck muscles become tight, they limit neck flexibility, but with targeted myofascial release and movement therapy, the vertebra can be freed so you have greater range of motion (think being able to look over your shoulder without feeling a painful pinch in your neck and shoulder).
